Welcome!

Step into to my world – a world where paintings are made slowly, with skills passed down through the ages and where light still dances on gold.

I create illuminated pages using historic techniques. The work may be inspired by the beauty of medieval manuscripts or have a contemporary design. It is all made with painstaking attention to detail and has been described as ‘fascinating, delicate and original’.

Toni Watts illuminated pages

24 carat gold leaf gleams on the page and, for traditional pages, the pigments used are, as far as is possible, those that would have been used in medieval times, from the stunning blue of the most costly imported lapis lazuli to locally sourced earth colours.

I learnt my skills both from The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London and the few remaining master illuminators. I enjoy passing on that expertise to those who are interested, teaching and demonstrating across the UK.
